Things to
do in the Dog Days of Summer
Explore
the San Juan and Gordon Rivers by canoe or kayak. Take a picnic
lunch and walk the local trails. Logging history abounds with the
remnants of old rail beds, steam donkeys and camp towns.
A
short drive out to Botanical Beach and you can visit the wonderland
of the sea-bottom by gazing into crystal clear tidal pools. A verse
from an old America song, the ocean is a desert with its
life underground and the perfect disguise above describes
this experience to a T.
Fishing
enthusiasts can charter a trip to the Swiftsure Bank for halibut
or fish along the coast for the big tyee (30 lb. plus spring salmon),
coho and sockey. Along with cod, crab and trout from the two local
rivers Health Canada will be proud of you
eating all that fresh
fish. Pssst! If youre not into catching it buy it fresh, in
season, from Stuart next door to the Port Renfrew Hotel.
Wildlife
enthusiasts can see killer whales, grey whales, eagles and osprey
and of course the land mammals such as black bear and deer. Those
large white birds up the San Juan arent geese, but swans.
Things to
do in the Dark Days of Winter
THE
STORMS!!! If youre a romantic then this season offers
the darker beauty of Port Renfrew. The power and indifference of
the ocean is both scary and fascinatingit reminds one how
powerless we are compared to Mother Nature. The sound and fury is
well worth experiencing but be careful and keep some distance from
the shore.
Walks
along the beach looking at the twisted remains of driftwood, the
forest draped in swirling ocean mistslike old spiritsis
enough to make you want to paint or write the masterpiece. It touches
the isolation that we so often crave living in the crowded urban
centres and
its magical!
